While in Europe such small apartments are rather the exception, in other parts of the planet people have long been accustomed to living compactly. In Japan, you may be surprised that very on most balconies are stored mattresses. In this country, there are a lot of people and little space, so apartments are usually quite compact. It is often a narrow long room with one window. For zoning, Japanese lightweight partitions and move them to transform the room.

For example, you can temporarily expand the living area, reducing the bedroom. Many rooms are just tatami instead of parquet. Tight rooms, you can’t make a bed. They sleep on the floor, on a mattress, putting everything away every morning in built-in closets. Mattresses are hung out on the balcony once a week to dry in the sun. You look on the weekends and there’s a mattress show on every balcony. If you don’t follow this procedure, mold grows on the tatami under the mattresses in a couple of weeks.
